The Next-Gen RAV4 Revealed: Big Updates Arriving 2026

If you've spent any time on Australian roads over the past few years, you've seen just how popular the Toyota RAV4 has become.

It's practical, dependable, and just seems to suit the way we live here - whether you're running around Brisbane during the week or packing up for a weekend on the coast. And now, it's about to take another big step forward.

Set to arrive in the first half of 2026, the next-generation RAV4 introduces some major updates that bring new levels of efficiency, performance, and technology - while still staying true to what's made it such a strong performer in Aussie driveways for decades.

Plug-In Hybrid? Yep, that's happening

One of the most talked-about changes is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version - the first Toyota PHEV to be sold in Australia. That means you'll be able to drive short daily distances on electric power alone (up to 100km, depending on how and where you drive), with the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer trips.

It's a smart move. For many people, that means school runs, commutes, and errands can be done without using a drop of fuel, and when it's time to head out of town, you won't have to worry about charging stops.

There'll be both 2WD and AWD options, with the all-wheel-drive version delivering impressive performance figures - more than enough to handle steep drives, gravel roads, or just the occasional overtaking lane.

More Edge: New GR Sport trim

Toyota's also adding a new GR Sport flagship to the mix - available only with the AWD PHEV setup.

It's a bit more performance-focused, with unique styling, sportier suspension tuning and upgraded steering. It won't turn the RAV4 into a track car, but it does offer something for drivers who enjoy that more connected feel behind the wheel.

Same practicality, more refinement

Beyond the new powertrains, the sixth-gen RAV4 gets updates across the board. The hybrid range has been refined to be even more efficient, and there's been plenty of attention paid to improving the interior, the multimedia system, and safety tech.

Inside, things look and feel more modern. The updated infotainment system is faster and easier to use, voice commands are more responsive, and navigation has real-time traffic updates and helpful Google points of interest baked in.

On the safety front, the latest version of Toyota Safety Sense adds features like front cross-traffic alert, improved blind spot monitoring, and a new panoramic 3D view for parking. It's subtle stuff, but it all adds up to a more confident, comfortable drive-especially in city traffic or tight carparks.

A RAV4 that still feels like a RAV4

Underneath all the upgrades, it's still very much a RAV4. Same practicality, same reliability, and the same versatility that's made it a go-to for so many Australian drivers. The updates don't reinvent the wheel-they just make it better.

If you already own a RAV4, this next chapter will feel like a natural evolution. And if you've been thinking about making the switch to hybrid or plug-in power, this new generation might be just the right time.
